Pietro da Cortona e il Disegno

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the birth of Pietro da Cortona, the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica and the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca have dedicated this exhibition to the drawings of this great artist of the Roman baroque.

Calliope

Drawing was one of the fundamental and constant elements of the artist’s work (both in his youth, with the rediscovery and study of the classical art and later in his life when it became an essential tool in the preparation of major decorative works).

For the first time, the sketchbook known as the Taccuino Odescalchi containing sketches by Cortona and Ciro Ferri, is on show to the public.
This prestigious exhibit has recently become part of the collection of the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica and is the centrepiece of the exhibition around which the various sections, each with its own particular theme, revolve.

The exhibition also includes drawings from major Italian and foreign collections, two large preparatory cartoons for the Barberini tapestries and important engravings, all of which contribute to a deeper understanding of Pietro da Cortona’s graphic art.
