The School of Business Science has worked since 1986 for the formation of professional specialization. It has been promoted by public and private bodies (local and provincial authorities of Florence, the Chamber of Commerce, of Industry, Craftsmen and Agriculture, and the Industrial Association of the Province of Florence); some specific courses are established by the Region of Tuscany and the EEC.In the continual, innovative and experimental formation of its programme, attention is given to both international experience and the development of Italian working opportunities. The principal objective of the School is to prepare the students for the world of work.

The main course developed at the SSA is the "Course in Business Management"

The professional formation of future "intermediate cadres", who have a particular responsibility in business. Their function is related to "know how to do" because it is fundamental to have an up-to-date competence in their specific sector, but it is also important to have the capacity to suitably organize and motivate others in the business. Students must be aged between 18 and 25 and posses at least the "Diploma of Maturità" (GCE/GCSE).

Eighteen months of intensive learning, of which the first 12 are fulltime with obligatory attendance.

The first 6 months are spent in the classroom. This is the first phase of the Course in which the aim is to give a homogeneous knowledge to the students (who come from different backgrounds of technical, language and classical schools) on the themes of general economics and business law, statistics, organization and management, and informatics.

Particular attention is given to the preparation in a foreign language (English, French, German, Spanish Russian, Chinese and Japanese). The following 6 months are dedicated at the three specialization:

  1. Marketing, distribution and sales techniques;
  2. Administrative management and cost accounting;
  3. Informatics for the organisation

For Marketing students it is planned that a part of the course is spent abroad, to emphasize the opportunity of experience; which is always important, but particularly in this specialization.

This project (with the assistance of Company and Institutes which collaborate with the School) has a teaching programme providing stages in the Countries involved.

The final 6 are spent in business ("stages") for useful experience to verify the variety of the professional and human culture, to test the importance of all knowledge, and the scientific nature of knowledge based on the concrete.

Bridgwater College is a Further Education College which is mainly government funded. Its aim is to provide high quality training and education to students over the age of 16. An increasing number of students are on Higher Education programmes, franchised from universities, such as the University of the West of England, Bristol. The college is directly involved in the target sector as it offers Higher National Diploma in Marketing, which trains students in areas such as Market Research and the preparation of reports. The students on this programme will carry out the project Euro Angels.

These students are currently involved in a Market Research project for our local authority, Sedgemoor District Council, finding out public opinion towards a regeneration plan for the town of Bridgwater. Last year's students carried out a similar project for a neighbouring local authority, West Somerset District Council, on the perceptions of tourists in the area.

With regard to managing transnational projects, Bridgwater College has had a link with Skive Business School in Denmark, funded through the LINGUA scheme. This has run successfully for five years and involves 20-30 students exchanging each year to work on joint projects. Of course we also have the exchange with SSA, Florence, which has run since 1996.

The "Akademie der Saarwirtschaft" (ASW) ("Business Academy of the Saarland"), founded in 1991, is a government-approved occupational academy supported by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Chamber of Craftsmanship and the Employers' Association of the Saarland. ASW trains students as Management Experts (B.A.) and as Business Computer Scientists, with speciality in commerce (B.A.).

Actually, about 200 students from 120 companies are registered. Requirements for access to the Academy are „Abitur" (A-levels) or „Fachabitur" (A-levels in a particular subject), and individual indentures with a company acknowledged for training. The three-year studies are structured into an internal company training programme and a theoretical part taught at the Academy. Within the framework of the latter, topics of business, economics, accountancy, finance, marketing, logistics, and information studies are trained.

Projects and case studies -partially abroad- complete students' qualifications. The gained theoretical qualifications are translated into the internal company training programme, and are broadened by knowledge concerning the special needs of the individual training company.

Since 1992, exchange programmes supported by the European Union, have regularly taken place in collaboration with the following institutions: Stevenson College in Edinburgh (Scotland), International Business Academy in Kolding (Denmark), Scuola Szienze Aziendali in Florence (Italy) and Istitute International de Commerce et Distribution in Paris (France).
